mormones

Hinckley, get in your knees, and then get up and just doit. 2 nefi 20-22.

Santiaguinos postergan gastos y replantean vacaciones

aprender a gatear /rolling crawler tips

Crawling Tips for Baby
Throughout my research on baby crawling, I've come across many crawling tips. I would like to share with you a proven technique so powerful, it will make your baby more tolerable to stomach lying.
And guess what?
You can safely use it on babies as young as 3 months old!!
Lets get started...
Get your baby crawling in no time with these valuable crawling tips:
Crawling may not happen naturally if your child does not endure lying on his stomach. Use this technique below to help with baby crawling and make your baby more tolerable to lie on his stomach.
• Tip 1 - Place your baby on his/her stomach on a carpet on the floor.
• Tip 2 - Gently hold your baby by the elbows and draw both elbows towards your baby's body as if he/she wants to lie down on his/her elbows. Continue to provide support.
• Tip 3 - Try to get some measure of the distance between the floor and your baby's upper body in the supported position.
• Tip 4 - Get a roller/ball with approximately the same diameter as you've just measured. Rollers are soft cylindrical shaped toys - preferably solid. You can use an inflatable infant crawling roller, but solid ones normally last longer and can also be used later to help your baby to sit and walk. Place the roller between your baby's upper body and the floor for support. The roller shouldn't be too big. Your baby's elbows must still reach the floor when lying on the roller/ball.
• Tip 5 - Put the roller/ball underneath your baby's upper body... arms hanging over the front of the roller/ball. This supported position will also allow your baby to lift his/her head and exercise the neck muscles.
• Tip 6 - Get down on the floor directly in front of your baby, facing him/her. Now, let your baby look at your face while you talk in a high voice tone. Make funny faces to amuse your baby and let this exercise encourage your baby. Crawl on the floor with your baby and urge him to look up to your face.
Remember: Your baby should focus on you or a toy in front of him/her. A focus point will encourage him/her to exercise those muscles to reach for a object.
The roller/ball helps your baby to lift his/her upper body and stimulate visual perception. The more you exercise those muscles the sooner they will be able to endure longer sessions. But make sure they enjoy this activity. I was thinking to make a baby crawling knee pad for my baby, but realized to stimulate crawling knees tips...
http://www.raise-smart-kid.com/crawling-tips.html
You only need to spend 3-5 minutes daily to get results.
...But, you will see results more quickly if you can fit in more than one session per day.
Repeating the crawling tips above will get your baby supporting his/her body on both knees and straight arms. Now only the moving forward motion should be added for the all important midline crossing. Also think about buying a crawling baby doll to do this exercise alongside your baby.
Now, don't rush off to the nearest baby store to buy an infant crawling roller or rollers to help baby crawl as shown on the right - a soft inflatable ball will also do the trick. I used a smaller version of those big gym exercise balls and it worked perfect!! You can always use the ball afterwards to exercise hand-eye coordination or exercise your own stomach muscles.
The bottom line ...
...to get your baby crawling is easy, critically important... yet, often neglected. But with these easy crawling tips and affordable method it's a breeze.

Baby Crawl...
How You Can Make It Happen

Following our baby crawl article, we've had many requests on how to make a roller or where to buy one.
Then I remembered...
Many years ago I helped a 13 month old baby with this "roller". I had to make do with what I had available at that time.
I do remember that the boy started crawling very soon after I've used this "roller".
So, here are 2 ways to make a roller.
The first one I call the "crawl towel".

Baby Crawl Towel
1. Take any normal large bathroom or swimming towel.
2. Spread it out flat on the ground.
3. Reduce the width of the towel by folding it in half. You'll now have a long narrow towel.
4. Form a roll by rolling the towel over the length of the towel. Start at one of the short ends and finish at the other short end. You should now have a short fat towel roll.
5. Use this "roller" exactly as described in the baby crawl article.
6. If the roller is too small (low), then use 2 towels rather than just one.
The second one I've used is the "crawl coffee tins".

Baby Crawl Coffee Tins
1. Get 3 empty coffee tins with sealable plastic lids. These often have diameters of about 5" (12 cm).
2. Fill the tins with dry sand and replace the plastic lids.
3. Stack the tins one on top of each other. Lay the tin tower on its side on the ground.
4. Cover the tower with 1" foam rubber or 1" soft cloth.
5. Wrap the padded tower in denim, artificial leather or any other durable material. I like to make a tight-fitting "pillow case" in which I put the tins.
6. That's it... as simple as that!
Finally, just closely follow the steps outlined in our baby crawling article. That will get you the results.

6 Proven Steps To Get Your Baby Crawling In No Time
... And, Discover Why Baby Crawling Encourages Development

Very few parents realize just how many hidden, yet powerful benefits can be unlocked if their baby crawls at an earlier age.
You may not be aware that encouraging your baby to crawl holds an important key for better future performance. But whether you're aware of it or not, you should seriously consider encouraging your baby to start crawling... as soon as possible.
Crawling Must Be Done... To Get Every Bit Of Stimulation Needed For Optimum Development
Crawling helps your baby to become stronger, learning the surroundings faster, improves visual skills and boosts physical abilities.
Your baby may... given enough time... spontaneously learn to crawl. But crawling may not happen naturally if your child doesn't endure lying on his/her stomach.
What this means is that even at this early age Baby may then be developing at a slower rate.
Now, there is an easy yet powerful and proven technique I've used many times to get babies crawling. It's so powerful it will surely help your baby crawl sooner. In essence this technique makes Baby more tolerable to stomach lying.
In fact, babies with poor head control often don't like lying on their stomachs. In fact, here's an interesting discussion to argue this aspect of
Best of all...
It Works On Babies As Young As 3 Months Old
Here's the exact technique to get your baby crawling in six easy steps.
Step one... place your baby on his/her stomach on a carpet on the floor.
Step two... gently hold Baby by the elbows and encourage supporting him/herself on elbows. Continue to provide support.
Step three... measure, or try to get some measure of the distance between the floor and Baby's armpit in the supported position.
Step four... get a roller with approximately the same diameter as you've just measured. Rollers are soft cylindrical shaped toys... preferably firm. You do get inflatable ones, but firm, dense ones normally last much longer and can also be a valuable aid to get Baby to sit and walk.
The roller will be placed underneath Baby's upper body for support. It's important that you don't buy the roller too big. Baby's elbows must still reach the floor when lying over the roller.
Click here to see how easy it is to make a baby crawling roller .
Step five... put the roller underneath Baby's upper body... elbows touching the ground in front of the roller. This supported position also allow Baby to lift his/her head and discover the surroundings.
Step six... get down on the floor directly in front of Baby, face towards Baby. Now, let Baby look at your face while you talk to, amuse and encourage Baby to lift his head and take part in the conversation.
Step six is the most important step of this activity. And... Baby will surely endure longer sessions and crawl sooner if it's enjoyable.

Remember, Baby should focus on you and naturally develop a sense of using both legs for support. In no time you'll see Baby supporting the upper body on straight arms and bearing weight on both knees... ready to crawl.
The power of a roller lies in helping to raise Baby's upper body and to look at the surrounding... all while lying down.
And guess what?
Only Spend 3-5 Minutes Daily To Get Results
But better still... results will come even faster if you can do more than one session per day.
Trouble is, many parents are reluctant to buy any toys or aids such as rollers. Too expensive - is often the criticism. But, the trick is really to find out how many other uses can you find for a roller. In this case you can definitely use a roller also to speed up sitting and walking.
The bottom line is... getting Baby crawling is easy, critically important... yet, often neglected. But with this easy, affordable method... it's a breeze! For more information on getting your baby to crawl and other baby development ideas... click here

Exportaciones Fruticolas suben 8%

NEGOCIOS

Exportaciones frutícolas suben 8% en 2008 y llegan a casi US$3 mil millones

Wise Financial Management During Tough Economic Times

Wise Financial Management During Tough Economic Times 09/24/2008 07:13 PM MDT
Recent studies show one in four American workers is seriously distressed about his personal financial situation. Add to that the uncertainty of the economy and there becomes an increased need to improve personal and family financial management.
Richard W. Ebert Jr., the director of Employment Resource Services for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, says, “Financial problems are a source of much unhappiness and are certainly a major factor in family and work difficulties. Unresolved, they can lead to crushing debt and divorce.”
Knowing this, leaders of the Church have counseled its members for decades to prepare for hard times by avoiding financial problems and becoming more economically stable. Recently, the senior leadership of the Church published the brochure All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Finances to help members manage their resources.
The brochure advises families to “prepare for adversity by looking to the condition of your finances. We urge you to be modest in your expenditures; discipline yourselves in your purchases to avoid debt. Pay off debt as quickly as you can, and free yourselves from this bondage. Save a little money regularly to gradually build a financial reserve. If you have paid your debts and have a financial reserve, even though it be small, you and your family will feel more secure and enjoy greater peace in your hearts.”
The brochure is available on the Church Welfare Services Web site at www.providentliving.org. The Web site also provides the following guidelines for families to become more financially responsible:
1. Avoid debt. Learn self-restraint by spending less money than you make and saving money to purchase what you need. Avoid debt except for vital needs, education and the purchase of a modest home. If in debt, try to pay it off quickly. 2. Use a budget. Keep a record of your monthly income and expenses. With this information, set up a family budget. Establish how much you will save, how much you will spend for food, housing, insurance, utilities, etc. Reduce what you spend on things that are not necessary. 3. Teach family members early the importance of working and earning. Children should be responsible for the decisions that affect their own money and face the consequences of their bad spending. As your children mature, help them understand the family financial situation, budget goals and their individual responsibility within their families. 4. Work toward home ownership. Improve the home you acquire so you can use the accumulated equity for a better home if you decide to sell it. 5. Appropriately involve yourself in an insurance program to avoid the significant debts place upon families when they are uninsured. 6. Involve yourself in a food storage and emergency preparedness program. Planting and harvesting a garden annually can help the family budget and encourage food storage. 7. Build a reserve. Accumulate savings little by little and use it for emergencies only.
The Web site also provides a number of financial tools to guide families and individuals in the decision-making process. These tools can help determine — based on an individual’s own income — how soon loans and debts can be paid off, how much to save for retirement, how much to save to reach a specific goal, and the monthly payment on a new home.

http://www.inta.cl/atecnica/serv/Antioxidantes%20en%20Alimentos....Cultivando%20Salud.pdf

Specific foods that have the most powerful preventative effect
Certain foods have come to the forefront in the past few decades of cancer research as heavyweights in the battle against cancer. The National Institute for Cancer Research presents an all-star line up of foods known for their effective cancer-fighting properties:
Beans (or legumes), which include lentils and peas, are rich in fiber and contain several chemicals that boost immunity to cancer. Saponins have shown the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in different tissues; protease inhibitors slow down cancer cells from multiplying and suppress proteases, potent cell destroyers; and phytic acid slows the growth of tumors. A study of 3,237 men of different ethnic backgrounds showed that the risk for prostate cancer was 38 percent lower in those who ate the most amount of beans, as compared to those who ate the least amount.
Berries are good sources of vitamin C and fiber, as well as a wonderful substance called ellagic acid, which has been found in laboratory studies to prevent cancers of the skin, bladder, lung, esophagus and breast. Strawberries and raspberries are particularly high in ellagic acid, and blueberries are loaded with a class of anti-oxidants as powerful as any seen. So splurge on berries in your morning cereal.
Cruciferous vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, and bok choy. Substances in these vegetables have shown the ability to stop the growth of cancer cells in laboratory studies, particularly by regulating a complex system of enzymes that provide a good line of cancer defense. High consumption of cruciferous vegetables has been associated with a decreased risk for lung, stomach and colorectal cancers.
Dark Green Leafy Vegetables like spinach, romaine lettuce, leaf lettuces, kale, mustard greens, collard greens, and Swiss chard all contain high amounts of fiber, folate and a wide range of anti-oxidants which attack and remove hazardous free radicals from the body. Researchers have found that carotenoids in dark green leafy vegetables are effective in inhibiting the formation of breast and skin cancer tumors, and preventing lung and stomach cancer. High folate levels in men who ate diets rich in green leafy vegetables have been correlated with a reduced risk of lung cancer, particularly among men who smoke. Results from the Iowa Women’s Health Study showed a 44%lower risk rate for breast cancer in women who ate the most green leafy vegetables, as compared to those who ate the least.
Flaxseed is the best known dietary source for a substance called lignans, which appear to replicate the action of estrogen in the body. Flax oil does not contain lignans, though they are often added by the manufacturers. In some short-term human studies, flaxseed consumption modified estrogen metabolism such that there appeared to be a possible protective effect against breast cancer. It has also been shown to inhibit the formation of colon, breast, skin and lung tumors in more than one laboratory study. Flaxseed is also high in omega-3 fats essential fatty acids.
Garlic is a natural antibiotic and immune system enhancer, a free radical attacker, and it increases the enzymes that break down carcinogens in the body. Ample research has shown garlic to be one of the best foods to eat for cancer prevention, linking its consumption with slowing or stopping the growth of tumors in prostate, bladder, and stomach tissue, and preventing cancers of the skin and lung. The evidence is particularly compelling for garlic as a preventative agent against prostate and stomach cancers. The Iowa Women’s Health Study found that women who regularly ate garlic had a lower risk for colon cancer. Eat as much of this mighty food as you can stand!
Grapes, especially red and purple varieties, contain high levels of resveratrol, which belongs to a classification of plant chemicals called polyphenols. Resveratrol has been shown to slow the growth of cancer cells and inhibit the formation of tumors in lymph, liver, stomach and breast cells.
Green Tea is the best source of catechins in the human diet, containing about three times as many catechins as there are in black tea. The catechins found in tea selectively inhibit specific enzyme activities that lead to cancer and may also repair cellular damage caused by free radicals. Green tea has been shown to inhibit or block cancer development in colon, liver, breast, and prostate cells. Studies done in Asia show that frequent use of green tea lowers the risk for bladder, colon, stomach, pancreatic, and esophageal cancers. It has also been shown to aid in preventing recurrence of stage 1 breast cancer.
Soy foods, which include tofu, soymilk, soybeans, soynuts, miso (soy paste), tempeh, and soy burgers, are particularly relevant in their effects on hormone-related cancer. Soy contains phytoestrogens, a plant-derived, weaker form of estrogen that some scientists believe replaces the body’s stronger form of estrogen at estrogen receptor sites in the breast, thereby reducing the probability of developing cancer. Several human and laboratory studies have suggested that soy consumption early in life may help protect against breast cancer later in life. However, according to breastcancer.org, many doctors worry that phytoestrogens in soy may increase the risk of women who have already had breast cancer. In another human study, men who said they drank soymilk more than once per day for 20 years were found to have 70% lower prostate cancer risk than men who never drank soymilk.
Tomatoes contain the phytochemical lycopene, which is also found to a lesser extent in watermelon, papaya, and pink grapefruit. More than 35 studies have confirmed a lower risk of cancer as a result of high lycopene and tomato intake, especially cancers of the prostate, stomach, and lung. Lycopene compounds tend to concentrate in tissues of the prostate, so its protective agency there has received the most attention. Tomatoes have the highest anti-cancer potential when taken in a processed form such as tomato sauce, tomato paste, and tomato juice, because of easier absorption. The PDR website reported a study that found that people with the lowest levels of lycopene are three times more likely to get lung cancer than those with the highest levels. African Americans in the same study were found to have eight times the risk of developing cancer when lycopene levels were lowest.
Turmeric is the spice most often used in curry powder. It has an active ingredient called curcumin that has shown resistance to colon, breast, liver, oral, skin, and stomach tumors in laboratory testing on animals.
Yogurt consumed in high quantities has been linked in some population studies to reduced risks of cancer, particularly of the breast and colon.
Food guidelines for cancer prevention
Taking the above points into consideration, a healthy diet for cancer prevention emphasizes the following foods:
Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day (more are recommended: see What is the ‘5 A Day’ program and how can it help prevent cancer?). A recent report sponsored by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Study estimated that eating 400 or more grams daily of fruits and vegetables could prevent at least 20 percent or more of all cancers. In addition, those who eat the highest amount of fruits and vegetables have been shown to have one half the cancer risk as those eating the least amounts. Plant-derived foods contain phytochemicals, nutrients that act powerfully to prevent a healthy cell from turning cancerous. Phytochemicals have been studied for their role in boosting detoxification of the cells and stimulating the immune system, as well as their anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties—all hugely helpful in maintaining a healthful inner environment that reduces the likelihood of cancer from forming. Fruits and vegetables are high in vitamin A and beta carotene, the B Vitamins, Vitamin C, and essential minerals.
Choose foods from other plant sources, such as breads, cereals, grain products, rice, or beans several times each day. Limit consumption of refined carbohydrates, including pastries, sweetened cereals, soft drinks, and sugars. Choose whole foods that are rich in complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals over minimally-processed or highly-processed foods.
Eat plenty of fiber. Fiber moves cancer-causing compounds out of the body before they can create harm. It is also thought to dilute potential carcinogens, and may effect hormone production, thus lowering the incidence of hormone-related cancers like breast and prostate cancers. The National Cancer Institute recommends 20-30 grams of fiber per day. Foods rich in fiber are:
Whole grains such as barley and oats, oat bran, and nuts
Apples, bananas, blackberries, citrus fruits, pears, and prunes
Lima , kidney, pinto, and navy beans, chick peas, black-eyed peas, and especially lentils
Brussel sprouts, carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, and broccoli
To help you increase the fiber in the diet, the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation suggests that you substitute:
brown rice for white
whole wheat bread or rye for white
black beans for ground meat
bran muffin for croissant or pastry
popcorn for potato chips
unpeeled apple for applesauce
baked potato with skin for mashed potato
bean dip or salsa for sour cream dip
Partake of healthy fats. Healthy fats are good for you, in moderation. Olive oil, for instance, has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer. The human body needs fat for normal cellular functioning. So when you eat fat, replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats. These include sunflower, corn, and soybean oils (polyunsaturated fats) and canola and olive oils (monounsaturated fats). Two of the most beneficial fats are omega-6 and omega-3 oils, known as essential fatty acids (EFAs). The body cannot manufacture these fats, so they must be provided through the diet. Omega-6 fat is found in abundance in vegetable oils, margarines, mayonnaise, and salad dressings; omega-3 fat in fish, fish oil, and green plant food sources, especially spinach and mustard greens. Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil have been shown to have an anti-carcinogenic effect in the laboratory.
Strengthen your immune system. The Wellness Community website put together some eating suggestions for maximum immunity. The following chart lists some of the most potent nutrients in the fight against cancer, along with their food sources:

‘5 A Day’ program and how can it can help prevent cancer
In 1991, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Produce for Better Health Foundation launched a campaign to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables to 5 to 9 servings a day for every American. “There is no specific fruit or vegetable responsible for reducing cancer risk,” says the 5 A Day for Better Health Program website. “Research shows that it is the regular consumption of a variety of fruits and vegetables that reduces risk.” Five servings is considered the minimum. For men, the recommendation is nine servings per day; for women, it is seven.
To help people gauge their intake, the 5 A Day website defines a serving size as the amount of fruit or vegetable that can fit in the palm of your hand. The following portions are examples of single serving sizes:
A small (3/4 cup or 6 oz) glass of 100% fruit or vegetable juice
A medium-size piece of fruit (an orange, small banana, medium-size apple)
One cup of raw salad greens
1/2 cup of cooked vegetables
1/2 cup of cut-up fruit or vegetables
1/4 cup of dried fruit
1/2 cup of cooked beans or peas
Although the portions sizes are simple to understand, fitting them into a busy lifestyle is another matter. The Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation and the 5 A Day program offer the following tips for meeting 7–9 fruit and vegetable servings per day:
Have a glass of 100% juice in the morning. Add fruit to your breakfast cereal.
Snack on fresh fruit throughout the day. Grab an apple or banana on your way out the door.
Eat a big salad at lunch. Always order lettuce and tomato on your sandwich.
Snack on raw veggies with low-fat dip instead of chips or candy.
Keep trail mix made with dried fruit on hand for a quick snack.
Use the salad bar at your supermarket for precut fruits and vegetables.
Enjoy your favorite beans and peas. Add them to salads. Try black bean and corn salsa for snacking.
Replace creamy pasta sauces, with sautéed vegetables or tomato sauce made with healthy olive oil.
Top a baked potato with broccoli and yogurt.
Add fresh or frozen veggies to your favorite pasta sauce or rice dish.
Eat at least two vegetables with dinner.
Choose fruit instead of a richer dessert.
African Americans are at a higher risk for cancer and other diseases as compared to whites, and are also more likely to die from cancer. At the same time, African Americans consume the least amount of fruits and vegetables of any ethnic group. To help address the disparity in consumption rates, the 5 A Day initiative developed a wellness program for African American churches called Body and Soul. For the past ten years, this program has helped support healthy living, including increased fruit and vegetable consumption. Visit the 5 A Day website for more information or to start a Body and Soul program at your own church.
A final word about variety. Pay attention to the colors of the fruits and vegetables you choose—green, red, yellow, orange, purple, blue, and white—as nature has imbued each with unique nutrients and phytochemicals that deliver a more complete nutritional benefit when consumed together. Think of assembling a rainbow of colors on your plate; it’s more pleasing to the eye and will give you a good balance of phytonutrients at each meal.

ALIADOS NATURALES PARA LA PROTECCIÓN DE LA SALUD CARDIOVASCULAR
Diálogos con el experto
Dr. Alfonso Valenzuela. INTA.

Avoid brain drain with memory-boosting foods
Improve your mental health with common fruits, vegetables — even coffee
http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/25572443?GT1=43001
Every cell in your body needs a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients in order to stay alive and work properly, including brain cells. Because oxygen and nutrients are carried in the blood stream, anything that impedes blood flow will starve those all-important brain cells. The plain truth is that a healthy heart makes for a healthy brain. So keep your blood pressure and cholesterol in check, exercise regularly, don’t smoke and get at least seven hours of sleep each night.
Compelling research also indicates that certain foods and nutrients can help enhance your memory. Read the facts on fish, berries, leafy greens and coffee — and be sure you remember to incorporate them into your diet.
Fish (3 servings per week)Research suggests that when it comes to food and memory, fish plays a starring role. Specifically fatty fish like salmon and sardines, thanks to the ample amounts of omega 3 fats they provide. In fact, a study published in the Archives of Neurology in November 2006 found people with the highest levels of omega 3 fats were significantly less likely to be diagnosed with dementia, compared to people with the lowest levels.

Another earlier study conducted by researchers at the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago followed more than 3,000 men and women for six years to see how diet affected memory. People who ate fish at least once a week had a 10 percent slower decline compared with those who did not eat fish, a difference that gave them the memory and thinking ability of a person three years younger.
Fatty fish is concentrated in the most potent form of omega 3 fats (EPA and DHA), so go out of your way to incorporate three to five ounces portions at least three times each week.
Best fish to eat (low in contaminants AND high in omega 3 fats): Wild salmon, sardines, lake trout, pacific oysters, and Atlantic mackerel. If that’s not feasible, you can buy fish oil supplements or at the very least incorporate plant based sources of omega 3 fats (significantly less potent than fish): ground flaxseeds, omega-3 fortified eggs and walnuts.
Berries (one cup a day)Studies that focus on food and memory suggest that the more overall produce you eat, the better. But when it comes to fruit and your memory, berries rate number one! Berries have some of the highest antioxidant concentrations among fruit, and ALL berries are rich in healthy compounds called anthocyanins and flavanols… which may help protect against the breakdown of brain cells.
Plus these days, it seems you can’t say enough about the health benefits of blue-berries. What makes them so powerful? Their deep blue hue — caused by flavonoids — those natural compounds that protect the brain’s memory-carrying cells (neurons) from the negative effects of oxidation and inflammation. Blueberries are one of the best sources of flavonoids around, and encouraging animal studies suggest that diets rich in flavonoids may help reverse memory loss in humans. In fact, a new British study, published just last month, reveals eating plenty of blueberries can enhance spatial memory and learning.
Buy firm-fleshed berries from a farmer’s market, local supermarket, or health food store. For off season months, take advantage of frozen, unsweetened varieties. Berries taste great mixed into plain yogurt, as a topping for hot or cold cereal or right out of the bowl.
Leafy greens (one cup a day)Leafy greens like spinach, kale, collard greens, mustard greens, and turnip greens, are loaded with folate, also known as folic acid — a nutrient which seems to have a direct effect on memory. A study conducted at Tufts University in Boston followed about 320 men for three years. Those who had high blood levels of homocysteine showed memory decline, but if the men ate foods rich in folic acid (folic acid directly lowers homocysteine levels), their memories were protected.
An Australian study also found that eating plenty of foods rich in folic acid was associated with faster information processing and memory recall. After just five weeks of introducing adequate folic acid into their diets, women in the study showed overall improvements in memory.
Aim for one cup each day!Coffee (adjust to your personal tolerance)Good news for coffee lovers. About two years ago, researchers from the University Innsbruck in Austria found caffeinated coffee can temporarily sharpen your focus and memory. After giving volunteers the caffeine equivalent of about two cups of coffee, they observed that their brain activity was increased in two locations—one being the part responsible for memory. Results were observed using MRI technology. Without caffeine, there was no increase in brain activity.
Then, earlier this year, another study published in a leading Neurology journal, found the effects of coffee may be longer lasting — specifically in women. This four-year long study involving about 7000 participants... all participants went through thorough baseline evaluations – cognitive function was tested, along with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other vascular issues. Participants were re-evaluated at the two-year mark, and again at the four year mark.
At the end of the four year period, researchers found that women age 65 and older who drank more than three cups of coffee per day (or the caffeine equivalent in tea) had 33 percent less decline in memory over time than women who drank one cup or less of coffee or tea per day. The results held up even after researchers adjusted for other factors that could affect memory abilities, such as age, education, baseline cognitive function, depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, medications, and other chronic illnesses. This caffeine-memory association was not observed in men — the authors hypothesize that perhaps that’s because men and women metabolize caffeine differently.
So if memory problems are a major concern for you, and if you don’t have a medical condition that precludes caffeine, feel free to indulge in a cup or two in the morning to jump-start your brain.
Note: If you have elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, you should limit your caffeine fix to plain brewed coffee or tea. There is some evidence that unfiltered coffee (the kind used to make espresso, cappuccino, and latte) may raise cholesterol levels, especially in people who are already battling high cholesterol. To be safe, skip the fancy brews and stick with a regular cup of joe. Of course, be cautious and moderate with added sugar!

LA MAYOR AMENAZA ES LA INFLACION

LA TERCERA, mi'ercoles 2 de junio 2008
http://www.tercera.cl/contenido/26_26956_9.shtml

Necesito levantarme y seguire adelante.

Voluntary Slavery

Elder Oaks warns grads against 'voluntary slavery'
Sat, 06/21/2008 - 9:56pm www.newsroom.byuh.edu
Mike Foley University Advancement 21 June 2008
Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles [pictured at left] admonished the 235 new BYU-Hawaii graduate candidates gathered in front of faculty, family and friends in the Cannon Activities Center this morning, "Don't be a slave."
"We all know that slavery was abolished in the British Empire and in the United States over 150 years ago. But I have been astonished to read that there are still about 27 million slaves in today's world" — including an estimated 50,000 "trafficked into or transited through the United States."
"The slavery of these tragic victims is involuntary. They are victims of someone else's decisions, motivated by greed or other wickedness," Elder Oaks said. "Fortunately you are not likely to be victims of involuntary slavery. But if you are not careful, you can be imprisoned by another form of slavery, whose duration can be life-long. This evil has existed since the beginning, when Satan proposed the ultimate slavery. He would have taken away our power of choice, making us robots to his will."
"The Father's plan of salvation rejected that proposal, but since His plan was based on our power to choose, we each have the power to give ourselves over into many lesser forms of slavery. I call this voluntary slavery."
Elder Oaks pointed out such slavery includes:
Sin: "The Savior taught that whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin [John 8:34]," he said. "Father Lehi, in his last recorded discourse to his sons, pleaded with them to shake off the awful chains by which ye are bound, which are the chains which bind the children of men, that they are carried away captive down to the eternal gulf of misery and woe" [2 Nephi 1:1].
Drug addictions: Elder Oaks explained many Church leaders have said such personal choices lead to "slavery."
Passions and excessive preoccupations: "When we allow ourselves to be brought under the power of anything or anyone, we become a slave to that person or that thing," Elder Oaks continued. He also cited Elder H. Ross Workman, now President of the Laie Hawaii Temple, who said: "One can be in captivity to sin or to the pursuit of worldly honors, such as fame, wealth, political power, or social standing. One can also be in captivity through obsessive preoccupation with activities such as sports, music, or entertainment."
Wealth and debt: Elder Oaks pointed out that President Hinckley "used the metaphor of slavery to apply to the extremes of economic circumstances" and warned over a decade ago "there is nothing that will cause greater tensions in marriage than grinding debt, which will make of you a slave to your creditors." President Hinckley also warned "against wrong priorities in acquiring wealth. He said: 'Income is important, but you do not need to be a multimillionaire to be happy. In fact, you are more likely to be unhappy if wealth becomes your only objective. You will become a slave to it. It will color all your decisions.'"
Elder Oaks urged the graduates to shun voluntary slavery. "Prize your power of choice. Protect it against every surrender, every dilution, every threat. Hold to the values you have been taught by your worthy parents, by righteous teachers in these classrooms and others, and by the Holy Ghost whom our Father in Heaven has given to teach us and to protect us," he said.
Quoting John 8:31-32 — "one of the greatest passages in the Bible," Elder Oaks said, "True freedom is to know the truth, to act upon that truth to avoid sin, and then to claim the promise of Him who suffered for sin and can therefore make us free indeed."
"When we know the truth and act upon that truth, we can avoid the slavery of which I have spoken. Each of us has the precious gift of the Holy Ghost, whose function is to 'guide [us] into all truth' [John 16:13]. By keeping our covenants we can have the assurance that we will always have that Spirit to be with us. If we do that, the Savior assures us that we will always be free."
Elder Oaks concluded with another "truth most appropriate for this audience" by former U.S. First Lady Barbara Bush, who counseled young women graduates "to cherish their human connections, their relationships with friends and family. She said":
...As important as your obligations as a doctor, lawyer, or business leader will be, you are a human being first and those human connections with spouses, with children, with friends are the most important investments you will ever make. At the end of your life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, not writing one more verdict or not closing one more deal. You will regret time not spent with a husband, a friend, a child, or a parent.
"Our continued existence as a Church, as a people, and as nations depends on those men and women who are willing to sacrifice their own pleasures for the benefit of others," Elder Oaks said. "This includes, most importantly, parents who are willing to subordinate their own pleasures and comforts to bear children and raise them as faithful members of this Church and as responsible citizens of our free nations."
Earlier in the commencement exercises, BYU-Hawaii President Steven C. Wheelwright [pictured at left] urged the graduates to follow four "principles that will help you realize the great promises a loving Father in Heaven has in store for you":
Continuous learning: "You need to decide that such ongoing continuing learning is important to you," he said.
Set aside time each week to do so: It's important to"make the Lord a part of your daily learning" by continuing to live the commandments; and "don't be reluctant to ask God's help in such learning," President Wheelwright said.
Service: "The Lord expects and commands that we apply what we learn through service."
Apply what we learn "by looking for opportunities to bless the lives of others, thereby receiving the lord's blessings in our own life."
"Following these four steps will enable you to build on the foundation provided by your studies at BYU-Hawaii," President Wheelwright said.
Roger G. Christensen, Assistant to the Commissioner of the Church Educational System and Secretary to the Board of Trustees for BYU-Hawaii, also shared advice with the new graduates:
"Much of what you learn in college, many of the facts and details, will either be forgotten or outdated over time. However, knowing how to think and how to learn allows us to keep updated or to expand our knowledge by learning new things or to think about things in new ways," he said. He also urged the graduates to "make a personal goal to distinguish yourself by being honest at all times and in all things and in all places."
Abigail Guzman, a summa cum laude graduate in political science and former law student in her native New Zealand, spoke on behalf of the students. She told how seeing a photo of a former Kiwi classmate graduating in legal regalia brought her to the verge of becoming wistful "at those opportunities that it appeared I had missed out on, when I looked down at my two-month-old daughter sleeping in my arms and was struck with the realization that there is nowhere in the world that I would rather be at this moment."
"I anticipate difficulties and obstacles, because that is a natural part of life. But I take comfort in the fact that I have had so much preparation, and education, through my attendance at Brigham Young University Hawaii," she continued. "Each of us should feel reassured by the quality education that we have received here, which combines the academic with the spiritual."
"I have already started my full-time post-graduate employment as a stay-at-home wife and mother. While this is not a typical job for a recent graduate in today's world, I can't think of a better use for my fine education than to apply it as I love and serve my family."
"In my own simple way I am determined to do my part to be an influence for the establishment of peace internationally, and what better place to begin than within my own home," said Guzman, who will soon relocate to Perth, Australia, after she and her husband, Roberto — also a graduate — take their daughter [pictured immediately above] to visit her paternal grandparents in Ecuador.
Finally, Arapata Meha, BYUH Dean of Admissions and president of the Alumni Association, welcomed the newest graduates into a "network of thousands of dedicated men and women throughout Asia, the Pacific and North and South America. You are forever linked to Brigham Young University Hawaii by your achievements and experiences on this campus."

A GArage Sale Success

Garage Sale Success by Kim Grant Tuesday, June 24, 2008
LDSLivingMagazine
If you’re like most people, you have a basement full of items that once served a purpose, but now have worn out their welcome. A garage sale is a great way to clear out the clutter. Here are a few steps to make yours a success.
CollectCollect items in large boxes throughout the year. By the time you’re ready to sell, you’ll know what you have to work with.
CleanA shiny, new-looking toy will always sell better than one that’s covered in juice. Clothing as well can always benefit from a quick wash and press if necessary.
AdvertiseCheck out your local newspapers for rates and deadlines, including online— some are free. Posters and arrows around your neighborhood can help as well. Include your address, day and time, and a brief summary of the types of items you’re selling.
PriceA good rule-of-thumb is about onefi fth of the original value for quality items. Keeping prices in 25¢ increments helps with change. Have lots of small bills and quarters on hand, too. Make sure to keep all money safely tucked away in a fanny pack or cash box.
DisplayPut large, attractive items near the curb and others on tables, racks, or blankets for good visibility. Don’t have items lying around that you don’t want to sell, like your lawnmower, and don’t keep items so far away that you can’t keep an eye on them.
Call it a dayBox up any unsold items to be taken to your local charity and don’t forget to take down the signs.
